How we support children's mental health

At St Paul's we use a tiered approach to our SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental health) and Wellbeing provision. The foundation for our SEMH and Wellbeing offer is Whole School Provision. Learning about mental health is part of our PSHE curriculum. We use SCARF PSHE as a basis for lessons which has a strong focus on mental health and wellbeing. There is a Parents section on their website with information on supporting children's mental health among other things.

Beyond lessons our school culture embeds good mental health from the use of our Woodland Wonderland and OPAL playtimes, to our extensive range of enrichment activities and clubs, including Wellbeing Wednesday Club, to our whole school growth mindset approach. We also have our own mental health days such as It's Cool To Be Kind Week and Feeling Good Week where we promote good mental health for ourselves and others. We also use the Zones of Regulation to help us regulate our emotions when needed.

Our classrooms are calm places for pupils to learn. We have daily timetables, rules and our behaviour levels up in class so that pupils know the expectations. Adults use a calm approach with the children and we use music on entry and when working.

Parents are always included in any concerns we have about a pupils’ health. We ensure that parents have a voice and we recognise their contribution. We also actively promote good mental health for all, including for parents and families. Support for families is signposted on this webpage, at the office and sometimes through the newsletter.

We identify and support groups of children and individuals with particular SEMH needs (Low Level Need, Medium Level Need, High Level Need) through more targeted support.  Click on the document below to look more closely at our provision.
