Walk on Water

Year 6 writing inspired by Shakespeare's Macbeth

Year 6

We have been focusing on creating pieces of writing inspired by Shakespeare’s Macbeth. We have been particularly focusing on descriptive writing. Read on to see some of our descriptions of the battle scene in Macbeth.

Can you write a setting description?

As rain fell upon the vast field, soldiers charged into battle. Splat! Corpses fell one by one like dominoes. Macbeth was slaughtering everyone in sight and would stop at nothing. The cries of murdered soldiers rose in the gruesome landscape.

Crash! Claps of thunder filled the air as a blanket of fog lingered. The blood-thirsty tyrant, Macbeth, lunged at the enemy with bravery; sending them to their death. A flash of lightning lit up the sky, when rain poured down on each of the bodies. The smell of rot was all around. When another soldier dropped dead, the bitter cold took over the battle. Arrows flew and fell taking out many and missing the lucky.

In the eye of the storm, Macbeth confronted an old friend. Without warning, Macbeth attempted to stab Banquo but he parried it fearlessly. After a dual between valiant soldiers, Banquo beheaded Macbeth and stuck his head on a pole. He brought it back to the castle to celebrate the victory.

Can you write a setting description?

Crash! The growling thunder dominated the sky. A blanket of murder and death took over the heath. The sound of battle cries filled the air as the soldiers fought for their lives whilst smothered in blood. The fierce soldiers raged on as rain fell from the sky like long knitting needles.

A wave of terror washed over the battlefield as the war became more and more vicious. The blades of swords glistened like a mirror with deep, red blood splattered all over them. The earth cried out as the wind howled and a strobe of lightning swiftly crashed down on the soldiers. Despite the fear of death, the soldiers bravely persisted. As lifeless limbs lay on the ground, more and more bodies continued to fall.

Corpses fell one by one like dominoes and there was blood everywhere. Despite the vicious cold, the soldiers were sweltering under their armour. Adrenaline fuelled them to keep going. The mist wrapped its arms around the battlefield making it bitterly cold.
